Therapy Dogs visit the elderly as well as participate in activities with kids in after school programs, showing off their tricks and running relay races with the kids in control with assistance from their handler. They aid in healing by stimulating physical activity, enhancing memory, and increasing cooperation. Sunshine Service Dogs has teamed up with local libraries to create a time for children to read to trained Therapy Dogs and their human handlers. Studies show that children’s reading skills and motivation are enhanced when they read to a friendly canine partner. The dogs don’t judge or criticize readers; they‘re just happy to listen to a story.  Therapy Dogs are also very useful in school settings. We have trained and certified Therapy Dogs in schools assisting teachers and school psychologists with many aspects of teaching, motivating, calming, stimulating physical activity, enhancing memory, increasing cooperation, or however the handler feels the Therapy Dog will benefit the children.

Tales with Tails Reading Program

It’s fun to cuddle up with a good book. It’s even more fun to cuddle up with a good book and a warm dog. Program participants bring or choose a book to share with a canine friend. Sessions are individualized with each child spending about 20 minutes with a dog.  NW WI Reading Council has donated books and teamed up with Sunshine Service Dogs, Inc., so after reading three times to a therapy dog, the kids can choose a book of their own to keep and enjoy.  If you think your child would enjoy this reading experience, contact your local library for program dates, times; or contact Sunshine Service Dogs, Inc. at (715) 857-5095 or e-mail: k9s4u@lakeland.ws

Therapy Dogs working full time in facilities

We are proud of our Therapy Dog program in Care Facilities. Maddie with her handler, Christy, work full time at a care facility. Maddie a certified therapy dog certified through Sunshine Service Dogs loves her job of taking care and comforting the residents. They recieved a five year grant to find the benefits of having a certified theapy dog working full time with-in the facility. We are about one half way there and have already found that having the therapy dog, they have been able to cut the antipsychotic meds by 75%!

Our Girl Maddie-The Therapy Dog at Parmly LifePointes

The word love means many things to many people but to the residents of Parmly Lifepoints it means a cold wet nose.  Maddie is a 3 year old golden retriever giving everyday lessons in unconditional love.  Maddie was trained at Sunshine Service Dogs in Luck Wiand partnered with Christy Johnson, Recreation Therapy Director in November of 2008.

Maddie’s job is simple, walk around the nursing home and get pats, treats, and belly rubs.  She loves her job and gets excited to go to work everyday.  When she is waiting to get into the car before work she wags her tail so fast it moves her whole body as if saying, “I’m ready, I’m ready, I’m ready!!!” She grins from floppy ear to ear and rushes past me if I’m not moving fast enough.

Once at work Maddie’s instincts take over.  She knows just who has the treats and when the best time is to catch them at their “cookie jar”.  She travels from room to room swinging her tail and rubbing on residents hands as goes. She greats family as they come and when children visit she can be found in the middle of the group.  She is most famous for her upside down smiles and unashamed begging for belly rubs.

Maddie’s training at Sunshine Service Dogs prepared her to handle the special situations, sounds and stresses in a nursing home. Maddie’s skill at knowing who needs a four legged friend is amazing.  She is aware of the residents need for her to go slowly, lay quietly or give a gentle nudge. She helps with residents that are frustrated or confused by sitting next to them and staying with them.  She will reassure residents by laying at their feet and she will redirect residents that are upset.  She loves when residents brush her and the residents take great pride and comfort in doing this for her.

What Maddie does at Parmly LifePointes is very special because she brings love to everyone, she receives love from everyone, but mostly, she teaches us how to love everyone.
